Rural Health PCORI Project

Patient-Centered Approach

Georgia Watch received a Tier III Pipeline to Proposal (P2P) award from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) to support a project titled Assessing Health Outcomes in Rural Areas where Nurse Practitioners Provide Primary Care.  This project began in May 2015 and will now continue through July 2018. The Health Access Program at Georgia Watch has used the funds provided through PCORI’s P2P program to build a partnership of individuals and groups who share a desire to advance patient-centered outcomes research focused on the provision of care in rural Georgia communities by non-physician providers.  Pipeline to Proposal Awards enable individuals and groups that are not typically involved in clinical research to develop the means to create community-led funding proposals focused on patient-centered comparative effectiveness research (CER). Established by the non-profit PCORI, the program funds three tiers of awards that help individuals or groups build community partnerships, develop research capacity, and hone a research question that could become the basis of a proposal to PCORI or other health research funders.

PCORI is an independent, nonprofit organization authorized by Congress in 2010. Its mission is to fund research that will provide patients, their caregivers, and clinicians with the evidence-based information needed to make better-informed healthcare decisions. PCORI is committed to continually seeking input from a broad range of stakeholders to guide its work.

Georgia Watch plans to use this Tier III PCORI funding to identify a specific research question and write a proposal. Our partnership will focus on putting together a research proposal that may explore care provided by advanced practice registered nurses, telehealth technology, or school-based clinics. Additionally, we will be looking at ways to engage new national and state partners to help shape our proposal while working to strengthen the communications and governance structure that will support this work. Georgia Watch serves as the lead organization, with Augusta University College of Nursing serving as primary academic research partner.

Participate in the PCORI Project

Georgia Watch seeks input from patients, patient and caregiver advocacy organizations, provider groups, FQHCs, rural health centers, hospitals, policymakers and other stakeholders to determine the specifics of a patient-centered research question. Georgia Watch will serve as the lead organization and will convene partner organizations to discuss potential research questions. Participating stakeholders will determine which communities, diseases and desired health outcomes to focus on for comparative research purposes.
